How to make more of your Turkish money on holiday

Off on holiday to Turkey soon? Then it’s time to think about your travel money! The Turkish Lira is the official currency of Turkey, as well as Northern Cyprus.

Exchange rates vary of course, as with all currencies – as a guide, the average exchange rate between the Turkish Lira and the pound was 21.42 Turkish Lira to £1 in early 2023.

Where to get Turkish Lira

A guide to using Turkish Lira abroad

It’s a good idea to budget for at least 150 Turkish Lira per day – that’s about £20, and should cover the basics.

Bargaining (haggling) is very common in Turkey, particularly in bazaars, and it can be a lot of fun! In Northern Cyprus, it’s not as common, although you can often barter in markets.

Cashpoints are widely available in Turkey, and you should be able to pay using a credit or debit card in the major cities and tourist areas.

Tipping is a common practice in Turkey, but it’s not always a must. It’s a good idea to tip in restaurants (up to 10%), and in taxis and hotels.
