How to make more of your Mexican pesos money on holiday

If you’re off on a Mexican holiday soon, it’s time to think about your spending money! The Mexican peso (M$) is the official currency of Mexico, and it’s sometimes accepted in towns on the Mexican border in the southern US.

Like all exchange rates, the Peso rate can vary of course; as a rough guide, the average rate between the peso and the British pound in 2018 was M$21.50 to £1.

Where to get Mexican pesos

The peso isn’t a commonly used currency outside Mexico, so it’s a great idea to order it in advance. You can pick up your travel money from TUI at your nearest TUI Store, as well as online. You can also use our handy multi-currency TUI Travel Money card while you’re abroad.

It’s also simple enough to take US dollars and exchange them in Mexico. Some places in Mexico will actually accept dollars, though they may charge a higher price.

A guide to using Mexican pesos abroad

A daily budget of around M$800 per day (around £30) should cover food and activities – a luxury trip can be had for around £100 per day!

Bargaining (or haggling) is commonplace in Mexico, particularly in the vibrant, colourful markets.

Cashpoints are widely available in Mexico, but credit and debit cards aren’t always accepted, so it’s a good idea to carry some cash.

Tipping is commonplace in Mexico. Waiting staff and bartenders generally get a 10-15% tip, unless service is included, and it’s usual practice to tip hotel porters and parking attendants as well.
